Organic Compounds
Organic Compounds are our major sources for chemical energy.
Organic Compounds
Carbohydrates: Big moleculess, slowly digested.
- Complex sugars
- Major source of energy
- Induces monosacharides and polysacharides (starch-digestable and cellulose-not digestable)
Lipids: Composed of glycerol and fatty acids.
- Stored for energy use.
- Used for insulation, protection, and cell structure.
- Includes saturated and unsaturated fats, waxes, phospholipids, and steriods.
Nucleic Acids: Long chain of smaller molecules called nucleotide (composed of sugar, a phosphate, and nitrogen base)
- Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) controls all cell activity and determines genetics.
- Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) is used for the synthesis of protein.
- Each consists of sugar/phosphate backbone which nitrogen bases are attached.
ATP: Adenosine Triphosphate
- Single nucleotide with two extra energy storing phosphate groups.
- Main Energy currency of cell.
Proteins
- Composed of 20 amino acids
- Provide cell structure, synthesize enzymes, hormones, antibodies, bone cartalage, muscle, claws, hooves, hair, nails, ect...
- Need a balanced diet of protiens.
